Description
Sea Turtle Facts.
--The oldest known sea turtle fossils date back about 150 million years making them some of the oldest living creatures on earth. Just for some context...dinasours became extinct 65 million years ago.
--Leather back sea turtles can travel 10,000 miles every year.
--For sea turtles ; home is where the heart is. When its time to lay their eggs, female turtles return to the same nesting grounds where they were born.
-- Green sea turtles can stay under water for up to 5 hours however, their feeding dives usually last only 5 minutes or less.
--Leather back sea turtles can weigh up to 2,000 pounds.
--Females lay up to 150 eggs every 2 - 3 years.
--It is estimated that only one hatching in a thousand will make it to adulthood.
--Since they don't have to return to land to lay eggs; male turtles never leave the ocean.
--During the incubation period, sex is determined by the temperature of the surrounding environment. Warm temps tend to produce more females, whereas cooler temps result in males.
-- They're in deep trouble and its our fault. There are 7 species of sea turtles, 6 of which are either threatened or endangered. Humans pose the biggest threat to a sea turtles survival, which contributes to problems such as entanglement, habitat loss, and consumption of their eggs and meat.
--Lastly...they're totally adorable, though you already knew that.

Dianna, after you commented graciously on my Mabry Mill photograph, I explored your artwork. So fanciful, whimsical - and utterly delightful! Many struck my fancy...decided to comment on this one, because my sister used to have a room in her home designated for her work in turtle rescue. V/F I have followed you so I can come back and be enthralled by your imagination.
