Nudibranche Facts ;...
Nudibranches are mollusks in the class Gastropoda, which include, snails, slugs, limpets, and sea hairs.
They have a shell in their larvae stage which disappears in adulthood.
They may have tentacles on their head that help them smell, taste, and get around.
There are over 3000 species of Nudibranchs, and new species are still being discovered. They range in size from a few millimeters up to 12" long, weighing up to over 3lbs. They come in a wide variety of colors and shapes and are found in all the worlds oceans from cold to warm water.
They move on a flat broad muscle called a foot which leaves a slimy trail.
They have poor vision and can see light and dark however not their own brilliant coloration. They get their bright color from the food they eat.
Their prey includes sponges, anemones, hydroids, barnacles, fish eggs, sea slugs, and other Nudibranchs. They may be toxic to their prey however not to humans.
Nudibranchs have reproductive organs of both sexes which maximize their chances of mating.
They lay masses of spiral shaped or coral eggs.
The eggs hatch into free swimming larvae which eventually settle onto the ocean floor as adults.
These beautiful animals don't live very long.
Some live up to a year while others live only a few weeks.
